Product Characteristics

Adalat GITS

Adalat (nifedipine) is a dihydropyridine (DHP) calcium channel blocker (CCB) indicated for the treatment of hypertension and for the treatment of chronic stable angina pectoris.1 The Adalat Gastrointestinal Therapeutic System (GITS) is a technology that allows nifedipine a sustained release over a 24 hour period.2,3 The antihypertensive efficacy and safety profile of the Adalat GITS formulation have been demonstrated in large-scale, randomised, clinical trials.4-6

BP lowering

Adalat GITS provides effective and sustained BP lowering5

  • The INSIGHT study recorded blood pressure in patients (n=6321) with hypertension who were treated with co-amilozide or Adalat*5
  • 58% of patients treated with Adalat achieved the guideline-recommended BP target of 140/90 mmHg5
  • 69% of patients remained on Adalat monotherapy after 48 months5
*The primary outcome of INSIGHT was cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, heart failure, or stroke.

Specific delivery system

Adalat GITS uses a specific osmotic ‘push-pull’ delivery system

The Adalat GITS tablet comprises a layer of nifedipine and a layer of osmotically active granules, with a semi-permeable, non-water-soluble outer coating.2 A small hole is drilled through the outer coating.2

After administration, the tablet absorbs water to create a nifedipine suspension in the drug reservoir.2 As the polymer expands and the osmotic pressure increases, the drug suspension is extruded through the precision-drilled pore at a controlled rate over 24 hours.2

Adalat GITS is a specific technology not available with generic nifedipine formulations.
